lately i've been practicing on my own using a technique many of my favorite artists use. it's been working out some what. it's a shame foundation year doesn't allow you to explore different paints. in my class we are locked to using oil paint. i enjoy it, but there's something about it that doesn't work with me. i can't render at all with it, maybe because i'm impatient.

this piece is just a practice, i still need to finish the background. i want to add much warmer colors soon, and i have no idea what color her "hair-petals" will be. i had no composition in mind, just freestyled the whole thing.

so i've been trying to sketch people, and my friend gab was looking through some of my sketchbooks one night and i decided to sketch her. i suck at doing this, it's so hard! it literally took me 40 minutes to just sketch her face! i'm a perfectionist i suppose? i think i got her pretty well in this illustration though. i wanted to add some character, so i threw a little music reference in there! i hope she likes this, i'm really terrible at sketching people. i'm off to atlanta tomorrow for the rest of my spring break. good looks gab.

on another note:

i want to sketch more people. i just don't feel confident enough, and i feel afraid i'm going to ruin people. i have to overcome this i suppose, i'll be sketching balls-naked bros next year in life drawing classes. so not only do i have to worry about making them look accurate, i gotta worry about making their boobies accurate. (jokes) so i guess more practice practice practice!

i haven't illustrated a single thing in a while. i haven't even sketched or doodled. it's been a while since i've been inspired to actually create something. i guess it came to me today when i was walking around some random trails today at a local park. the woods were completely desolate of other people, and i had some time to just relax and enjoy the sun. it was nice. this painting is up for interpretation, i just felt i had to get this idea out once i thought of it today at the park.

on another note:

i really enjoyed reading 'the stranger' by albert camus. a very powerful novel that gave me some challenging thoughts. i really took camus' message to heart. it was like a little treasure or maybe an epiphany. i just loved how layered the novel was, especially this theme that life is meaningless and truly absurd--that people that are afraid (the chaplain at the end) try to find hope, or try to rationalize (the trial) things that don't make sense (meursault's emotionally-devoid actions). the beautiful ending of meursault coming to the realization of his own personal humanity. the fact that he finally felt like he was alive, when he was so close to death. meursault's sureness. his acceptance of his fate.

i feel like this message was really powerful, and really human. thinking about it now, generally we are all afraid of our pasts and futures. we get caught up worrying and fighting the tide. we fight this absurd life. we fear things society has taught us, not allowing us to live a virtuous and redeeming life. we are born into a world where you are told what is normal and what is fine. when you finally have the balls to think for yourself, to choose for yourself, people start freaking the fuck out like your some kind of rebellious juvenile.

is it so wrong to accept that life is irrational? is it so wrong to be sure of your own life? is it so wrong to not rely on irrational hope? is it so wrong to exist and be realistic? is it so wrong to choose and live in the now?

i've been sketching this out for a couple days now. i finally sat down and decided to finish it. i wanted it to be simple (like most of my work). the idea just hit me one day, when i drew it. at first he was a statue, then he became a person getting killed by the tree. i finally decided to work with the concept to convey the story of the fall of man from the christian religion. the fruits in there, the dead tree is the tree of knowledge, and the leaves bursting from the statue-esque adam's body represents his fall. i like it i guess.

it's cold out. this painting is inspired by how freezing it is. winter feels calm though. i would like it to be warmer though, i'm sick of starting my car 5 minutes early. more digital paint, taking a break from the traditional stuff. i think i captured a sense of calm elegance in this piece. enjoy.

edit: i noticed she looks like a prostitute. just throwing that out there.

on a different note, i've decided to attend the school of visual arts next year in ny. i'm pretty excited to have an opportunity to further sharpen my skills in art. i'll be an illustration major, so i'm excited to see how my college life turns out. currently the economy is tough, so hopefully things work out in the end. living in the city is expensive + sva tuition/fees. i'm probably going to have to do work study next year, and i won't have a social life. if anyone wants to room next year in an apartment near the lower east side, send me an email.

i've been trying to draw a story book comic involving a small prince too shy to live. he's dressed in boarding school garb. there are always butterflies flying out of his throat. he's a shy little boy. this started out as a fun doodle during religion class at school, and it ended up being pretty good. so i decided to paint it on photoshop. it took about eight hours to finish in total. fun stuff.

a snapshot of my latest piece. it's been a while since i've used photoshop to digitally paint. this project is turning out to be really fun. it's a refreshing break away from the gouache and watercolor. i really like the color scheme on this piece. i'll have the full illustration up as soon as possible. i'm trying to paint it really well on photoshop adding little touches and details

i noticed i'm a huge fan of keeping the pencil work very very pure and true to the original scan when i do these photoshop projects.

artist: bon iver. song: for emma, forever ago. a very soft spoken band from wisconsin. the lead singer/songwriter/guitarist justin vernon has the ability to capture such lovely melodies. at first, i wasn't too impressed with bon iver. maybe it was the little pretentious guy inside me that made me skeptical to their songs. but after burning 'for emma, forever ago' their debut album, i realized there is a lot of sweet soft treasure in their work. from the high baby like cries of vernon's voice, to the simple plucks of a baritone guitar, bon iver is worth your time to check out.

when i think of bon iver, i think of mountain cabins and burley men drinking beer. all that with some singing around a camp fire, while a bear in the back ground just groans.

empire of the sun is a phenomenal new wave/disco band. this song 'half mast' has a great 80s prom dance feel to it. treasure fingers recently made an extremely good remix of empire's track 'walking on a dream' you can find it here. the band itself is great if you just want to cruise to some 80s-esque tracks, but a lot of producers see house music potential in the vocals of the lead singer, and the overall bass lines they choose.

so i visited james jean's exhibition at the levine gallery in new york. lovely little adventure this weekend i suppose. i was just celebrating my acceptance into sva.

last night was ridiculous! connor, gab, ryan, brian, and calie. connor randomly bought a room for 3 nights just for himself at the W by union square. it was so so so so chill. at around 2am, we went to a bar to listen to some jazz. smalls was the name of the club? pretty legit jazz club. pretty legit friday and saturday.

music update mon frère. this is a fun little english dance band 'friendly fires' i really enjoy the their debut self titled album. pitchfork (haha yeah...) gave it a decent score. i give them a decent score. if you're into new wave, funky disco, electro dancey sounding songs get into them. i really like their tracks 'jump in the pool' and 'paris'. the singers got a great vocal style, and the band overall has some fun things going on.

so sticking to my word, i'm going to introduce more music that i enjoy. i've always followed soulwax around, but mainly the dance project part of soulwax dubbed: "2 many dj's" but i gave the actual band "soulwax" a go. this clip shows basically the philosphy of soulwax. soulwax is: soulwax (rock band), 2mandj's (dj set/producers), nite versions (live remixes of their own songs), radio soulwax (live performance of everything). true pioneers of the electronic rock/dance scene that we see today.

kids today probably only know of soulwax fame through the 2manydj's remix of mgmt's 'kids'

the band doesn't get enough credit. check them out.

i decided to illustrate something involving music. i drew a musician smoking a cigarette (because i feel like that's what all these lame rockstars do these days). i thought it would be cool to have musical notes as the smoke fuming from the stoag.

hmmm grey, black, whites for the water color on bristol. touched it up on photoshop. gave it a browner overlay because i'm addicted to the color brown (mmmm brown) i like how it turned out overall, he looks odd. i like that.

on the subject of music. i really am in love with animal collective's 'merriweather post pavillion'. i know the reviewers at pitchfork are known to be pretentious indie d-bags (according to hipsterrunoff: alt-bags) but i completely agree with their review of the new record. the new album is beautiful. i could describe it as the beach boys harmonies, a lot of lsd, a lot of layered samples, and a lot of synthesized arpeggios all mixed in a hodgepodge of musical genius. the lyrics are simple yet honest, and i love the songs 'my girls', 'brothersport', 'summertime clothes'. i highly suggest stealing it from the internet, or getting the lp (it's not out yet on cd) by the way! it's already making it's way up the charts in sales, and it's ony out on vinyl. how sick?

i'm also enjoying the justice documentary. it's hilarious, you could easily find it online.

SVA wanted observational work.

so i gave what the people wanted.

well it's 3am, i just finished all my applications and my portfolio discs. they will be mailed out this week, i'm pretty excited. i was just at a national portfolio review day this morning. i was so nervous, it was so intense seeing kids hauling in HUGE canvases of boobies and fruit. really really talented kids, i felt like poop compared to them. but to SVA, Pratt, and Parsons as a prospective illustration major, i am excellent at what i do and my work has potential. i may not have technique, but the three reviewers all said I show techniques of illustration. i may not be a fine arts guy, but the SVA guy said i have a good sense of conveying themes in my pieces, which is a major plus for illustration majors. the SVA rep said i'll shine in my classes if i work hard. he really liked me and gave me his card to set up an interview with him, he said i have a good sense of color, my pencil technique is fantastic, and my composition and use of negative space is really unique. the major negative comment from the 3 reps was the small amount of work i had, the sva guy liked me so much he wanted to see more. nevertheless they all said my portfolio is very solid and way above average. i'm just staying positive now and crossing my fingers!

for halloween folks, i decided to be alt fggt french/asian hipster dj xavier de rosney. the fact that i'm making fun of one of my dance music idols makes me ironic ey? the cross on my leather jacket is mimicked after the cross from the album "†" it pays homage to the band itself, and also the great video "stress" by justice (all the gang members have these crosses on their backs). it took me literally an hour to put the chrome tape in that shape. i found a wooden cross, and covered it with the tape for the accessory. on my white shirt i wrote, "we are your friends, you will never be alone again."

so yeah, i'm a huge fggt for actually putting time into a simple costume for a dj dance band.

i'm even more of an alt fggt for putting the photos together in such an artsy way.

"As the bells resonate slowly through Sufjan's vinyl, I write this letter to you. I finished two books this weekend, which changed my life, and revisited another. I'm sure you've felt severe amounts of depression and suffering. How do we escape our labyrinth of suffering?

I can honestly tell you I've become a miserable song these past few days. You get a lovely high one day, and then the waves just come in, and your life feels like a storm. Many nights have I stayed up thinking about a lot of things, maybe thinking a little too much, smoking a little too much, and sobbing a little too much. I don't know where I'm really going with this friend, but I love you, you are always on my mind. I want to find the answer to all of my problems, I want to know why I feel so fucked up emotionally, but I feel like I can never, and will never. And maybe I just have to accept it. Maybe, I'm just selfish desiring everything I want, maybe I have to step back and act selfless. I want to know I really exist for me, and not for others. I want to know I'm really alive.

I came to the realization that maybe life is a simple thing that we ourselves make very complicated. I feel like if everyone were a little bit more apathetic and cheerful, there'd be hope in humanity. One of the things that trouble me the most is Religion. How could we explain a God: an unexplainable thing, rationally. How, can we humans confine this peculiar thing that has been the cause of wars and hate, and the cause of love and miracles. How do we confine this spirit to rules, regulations, and religion? Is it really that simple, to just write a book 'inspired by' a mystery? Maybe God is a crutch for all of our problems, or maybe he really is a comedian laughing at an audience too afraid to laugh.

Do you believe in love? Love is an interesting thing. It’s so tender and soft, yet it can kill someone. You find someone, and for some reason you attach yourself to them. Not because you want to, but because it’s odd, for some reason, it just makes sense. You love this person despite you not even understanding it. Friend, she/he has absolutely nothing for you, she/he can offer you nothing but pain, she/he will never return this love. Yet you love her/him and hold her/him up as if you found the answer to life. Maybe the answer to life is her/him, but the saddest part of this song is you can never have it. And the most fucked up part is you know, you tell yourself this is how it will be till the end of eternity, yet you still love her/him, and you know she/he will never know.

Elliott Smith’s Waltz #2 is playing on my record player right now, it’s such a beautiful song. I watched an interview with Elliott Smith; he was talking about how he writes songs. He doesn’t look at the guitar’s fret board, he kind of just freestyles it, he feels the music, because he said if he sees his fingers then he can control what comes next, if he’s not paying attention he can create spontaneous songs with feeling. I thought that was very interesting, and sitting alone on a bench having my 30th philosophical cigarette of the day, I was thinking about life. We try so hard to control our lives, analyzing every situation, trying to control our destinies. Why can’t we just let go? Let life flow like a soft pretty song, or the tender kiss of a lover’s lips. Who cares if God is unexplainable! Who cares if he or she fucked! Who cares if your order at McHeartattack was messed up! Who cares you got a gold star in 3rd Grade! Who cares your favorite indie band is touring with Daft Punk! Who cares if they are getting a divorce! It’s easier said than done, but we have to sit back and relax.

Friend, I’m miserable. I know! There’s no doubt about it. But I feel peace. I feel like I found my answers, maybe not all of them, but I think I’ve found the answers. Maybe I can’t have the answers? But I know them, and at least I have that. If I die tomorrow, it’s fine. I feel like I accomplished a lot. I’ve met who I’ve needed to meet, I’ve fucked over who I needed to fuck, etc. It was lovely.

I’m getting real sick; yesterday I was coughing blood. I just want a hug. I feel like I’m in my labyrinth. It’s my maze, and I have to get out, it’s my test. I want you to know I never meant to say anything to hurt you. I want you to know I regret not kissing her. I want you to know I regret saying those horrible things to mom. i've come to the point in my life where i am extremely miserable. the kind that makes you throw up at night crying. mainly because i'm helplessly in-love with someone, and i feel so empty because i will never have that person to fill that part in my heart. when she pays attention to my shy self, gives me a hug, talks to me, it means nothing but friendly social interaction to her, but to me it's the entire world. this craving, this love, one second of being close to her is wonderful, but at the same time it makes me miserable because i know my desires will never come true.

i'm also miserable because my parents are going through some shaky times, and they are on the fringes of divorce. it's paying a huge toll on me because i bottle up all my sadness and anger because i'm afraid i might hurt this girl, or i'd hurt my parents. i feel completely empty and angry. i just want to cry my life out.

but hopefully i can use this to fuel more miserably paintings. i have nothing else to do, but who really cares about me now.

second attempt at watercoloring! i love how this one came out, it took about 3 hours in total! um its a mix media piece: water color, pencils, pastels, markers, and even some photoshop.

used the computer to tweak colors, contrast, and i added some digital paint also a texture.

i drew the image when i was listening to elliot smith's miss misery, and also i attempted to doodle the iron fist (it looked cool so i kept it in them image, i plan to take him out for my portfolio)

water color or 'colour' if we want to be fancy

so i just got a new sketch pad! it's huge! i couldn't even scan the whole page. but i felt like i needed to take a break from digital painting. i just got bored, so i found some super old water color set from like elementary school (crayola?) and attempted to water color after like 5 years of not even touching it. i'm proud of how it came out this little test.

i used some mixed colors, and a little white pastel action, and some brown markers. i applied a nice brown overlay in photoshop to produce a nice warm effect.

i don't really know what's going on in the illustration: just a hand that came out a little odd, a random superhero/boy with a quirky mask, i like the speech bubble with the musical note, um 'brutal' is up there because i wrote 'this sketch pad is brutal' and it didn't fit in the scan.

why is it brutal? well it's not like my moleskine there are so many tiny dimples in the paper, i don't know if i can get use to it, the moleskine is very very smooth, and i love it.

we'll see.

so i was at barns (barnes?) & noble today and i was looking through a communications design magazine. and i stumbled upon a lovely illustrator: sam weber i love this style of art!

tonight i plan to produce an aged look on paper using tea leaves hehe.

so the sun is rising at 5:50am, i haven't slept. dark rings around my eyes are forming, and i feel terrible. but i've got like that creative juice, the burst of inspiration? bliss? i hate it when it just pops out of no where.

so here's the run down on these illustrations:

the first is just some doodle, i like the shading i did with the 2h.

the second is an homage to rachel e morris who goes by the pseudo name subeo.

she developed another personality in her illustrations, a guy that smoked a lot. apparently from her blog she was always stressed in art school, resorted to cigarettes and her addiction showed whenever she doodled and this guy ended up on the paper.

she was really nice to me on deviant art when i decided to get serious with my art, i was a noob then 4 years ago. she gave me tips!

the third is a tree, and some octopus tenticles! i like drawing trees, mad fun!

i like to draw and paint on my computer. there's not much to say really, i guess i'll let my art do the speaking for me. i use to have a deviant art, but that community is pretty lame. so i decided to just make a blog, free from the deviant art anime loving subculture.

here is the latest piece i have finished, it's a batman illustration i sketched. i then scanned the crap, loaded it on photoshop and colored it with my wacom.

it's stylized i suppose, i took inspiration from a google image i found on the net. i only used one color for this painting, it's really the pressure i applied that affected the coloring over all.
